Research and Instruction

Subject librarians are committed to faculty and student success. Each Wright State academic program has an assigned subject librarian whose work can support faculty research and instruction in many vital ways, including developing the library’s collections in your areas of interest, identifying appropriate journals for manuscript submissions, and conducting literature searches to suggest search strategies for databases with articles relevant to your research subject.

Learning to do academic research is one of the biggest challenges facing college students. Our librarians can help your students critically evaluate information and effectively use library resources. Subject librarians will provide library instruction customized to your research assignments, offer library tours and orientation, meet with students for personal research instruction, support the development of new research assignments, and create Subject or Course Research Guides.

In addition, the library has created a series of workshops to help your students succeed where they often struggle, with basic research strategies. Faculty report seeing better research and writing from students who have completed these workshops. Our How-To Guide provides short introductions to assist in navigating the library’s resources.

Resource Delivery

The Interlibrary Loan department provides free electronic document delivery services for all Wright State faculty (a service not available to staff or students). We can provide a URL to the requested article, a PDF document or printed copy of an article, and delivery to your office through campus mail.

Course Reserves are materials designated by faculty or staff for use by students in a specific course; they include books, AV, textbooks, class notes, sample solutions, personal copies, or any physical item you wish your students to share. Print reserves collection can be restricted by location (in-library only) or by time period. Please allow two weeks to process start-of-semester reserves; two days during the semester.

Scholarly Communication and Research

CORE Scholar is an institutional repository managed by the Libraries. The institutional repository collects and makes available the scholarly output of Wright State faculty, staff, and students as well as local, regional, and Wright State heritage material. We can create personal or departmental profile pages highlighting your articles or research, publish open access and subscription-based journals, create conferences or events, and publish conference proceedings. Consider contributing articles, e-prints, preprints, statistical and geospatial datasets, technical reports, visual and scientific images, working papers, conference papers, audio/video files, electronic-publications, and more.

The Experts Gallery showcases the research of Wright State faculty members and the institution as a whole. The gallery is organized to connect faculty members based on areas of research and expertise. Metrics for the gallery demonstrate the breadth and impact of engagement and research with detailed, exportable analytics. The Experts Gallery is composed of individual faculty profile pages, created and maintained by library staff.

Librarians can help you protect your rights by providing training and assistance with identifying and avoiding predatory publishers who mimic open access journals and publishers in order to prey on researchers. Knowing your rights as an author of a scholarly article is an important and often overlooked first step in the publishing process. Use SHERPA/RoMEO to learn about publishers' use policies after publication and read summaries of self-archiving permissions and conditions of rights given to authors. Publishers often require you to sign an agreement that transfers copyright from your work to them and limits your ability to use, share, and distribute your work. Learn about statements that can be included to retain your rights, as well as other methods and resources.
