Preservation Work Has Begun!
May 1, 2025
It’s Preservation Week!
Since 2010, the American Library Association has dedicated one week each spring to highlight the importance of preservation and encourage action to protect collections of all sizes. Preservation is always on the front of our mind here in the Special Collections & Archives, and this week, we’re excited to share some great news.
First, a bit of background:
Last year, we received a $75,000 grant from the National Aviation Heritage Alliance to upgrade our facilities and enhance the preservation and security of our collections. This generous grant was matched by the Wright State Friends of the Libraries Foundation with support by long-time friend and volunteer in Special Collections and Archives, Karen Pittman, who passed in 2022. We are deeply grateful to these partners and to our community as we continue to preserve and provide access to the rich history of the Miami Valley and Wright State University.
Now for the update:
Work on the project is officially underway! Just last week, a contractor installed UV-blocking film on the northwest-facing windows in our office and collection storage areas. An approximate total of 1,500 sqft of film was applied to help reduce heat and light exposure—a small change that will have a big impact on the long-term care of our materials.
More exciting plans are in the works, so stay tuned and follow us on social media for additional updates.
