During his lifetime he engaged in pioneering balloon experiments, served as an official timer for flight trials, collaborated with Orville Wright on various projects, and invented a wide range of mechanical machines from the statoscope to amusement park rides. Wright Company Records
The Wright Company was formed in November 1909 with Wilbur Wright as President and Orville Wright one of two Vice-Presidents. In 1915, Orville sold the company to a group of investors, which later merged the company with the Martin Company. The records consist of copies of material from the Wright Company Records held by the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington. Included in the records are Wright Company board of directors meeting minutes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and legal documents, including articles of incorporation, selling of the company, and the merger with the Martin Company. Also included are copies of ledgers that document a variety of financial transactions. The records do not include any information concerning Wright Company personnel. Orville and Wilbur Wright never constructed a complete set of drawings for any of their flyers or gliders. In the mid-1940s, friend of the Wright's, Edward Deeds, commissioned Louis P. Christman, to complete, not only a set of drawings for the famous 1903 Flyer, but also the 1900, 1901, and 1902 Gliders, and the 1903 and 1904 Flyers. This collection contains Christman's original drawings of the 1903 Flyer's Engine Support Rails and Wing Ribs. This two-page letter and accompanying envelope is from Mrs. Francis (Mary) Winter to Mrs. Tasker (Eleanor) Bliss. Mrs. Winter's husband, Major Francis A. Winter, was the surgeon who cared for Orville Wright at the hospital at Fort Myer, Virginia, after Wright's September 17, 1908 crash there. The accident resulted in the death of Wright's passenger, U. S. Army Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge, whose death is considered the first powered airplane fatality.
