Tutorial Objectives

Module 1:
Getting Started With Library Research

When you have completed Module 1 you should be able to:
  • Identify the main concepts of a research topic and generate a list of search terms.
  • Identify different elements of an information need: type, level, timeliness, and scope.
  • Recognize that information resources will change based on your research needs.
  • Distinguish between popular and scholarly publications.

Module 2:
Evaluating Information Resources

When you have completed Module 2 you should be able to:
  • Identify the criteria needed to evaluate print, electronic, and web information resources.
  • Describe the purpose of citing sources and list the steps to avoid plagiarism.
  • Determine the elements needed to write a citation for a bibliography.
  • Identify additional sources for research assistance.

Module 3:
Applying Research Skills to Specific Subject Disciplines

When you have completed Module 3, in a subject specific discipline, you should be able to:

For General Research:

  • Identify general research resources and learn how to select subject specific databases.
  • Determine how to conduct a keyword and subject search for books.
  • Describe the steps necessary to identify and access general research resources.
  • Determine how to locate and retrieve information in two general research databases: Academic Search Premier and LexisNexis.

For Counseling:

  • Identify research resources and know how to locate needed information in Counseling.
  • Determine the relevancy of information resources in Counseling.
  • Learn how to locate and retrieve Counseling information in two major research databases (PsycINFO and ERIC).
  • Describe the steps necessary to identify and access Counseling resources on the Libraries' web site.

For Education:

  • Identify research resources and know how to locate needed information in Education.
  • Determine the relevancy of information resources in Education.
  • Learn how to locate and retrieve information in the two major research databases in Education (ERIC and Education Abstracts).
  • Describe the steps necessary to identify and access Education resources on the Libraries' web site.

For Nursing:

  • Identify research resources and learn how to locate needed information in Nursing.
  • Determine the relevancy of information resources in Nursing.
  • Identify core Nursing journals.
  • Describe the steps necessary to identify and access Nursing resources on the Libraries' web site.
