New @ your library

The University Libraries have gone through lots of changes this summer - come see what’s new! Whether you’re a new or returning faculty, staff or student, you’re sure to learn something about the University Libraries.

Library tours will be offered September 1st through 4th at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and September 8th through 10th at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. to show off the redesigned media room, the hi-tech presentation practice room and some other exciting features.

Tours will start in the Dunbar Library lobby on the first floor, close to the circulation desk.

Health Sciences Journals to Move to Dunbar Library

As the next step in the consolidation of the Fordham and Dunbar Libraries, the University Libraries will begin moving the health sciences journals currently housed in the Medical Sciences building to the bound journals collection on the second floor of the Dunbar Library.

The first step in the process will be to reduce the size of both collections so that they can be combined in the existing space. To accomplish this, the Libraries will have to reduce the number of years that are held on campus in both libraries from the current 20 years to 10 years. Library staff will begin the process of removing all volumes prior to 2000 in the next few weeks. While this is being done, the volumes that are to be moved from Fordham to Dunbar will be assigned call numbers and labeled so that they can be interfiled with the existing collection in Dunbar. We hope to complete this process as quickly as possible in order to reduce the amount of time that the health sciences journals are in storage.

Many of the journals that will be removed are available online through JSTOR or the OhioLINK EJC. In other cases, we have purchased online backfiles from the publisher. If the volumes that are being removed are available in one of these stable online archives, they will be withdrawn. The other volumes to be removed will either be transferred to the regional depository or withdrawn, depending on their availability through the OhioLINK consortia.

Media Room Renovation Nearing Completion

As part of the Dunbar and Fordham Libraries’ consolidation, the Current Periodicals and Media area is being transformed into a Media Room which will include our media and microform collections as well as additional public workstations. This project is currently underway and should be completed by the end of July.

Progress to date includes incorporating the current periodicals with the bound periodicals collection in the adjoining area. We have also created a “popular journals” reading area in the Wright Café on first floor where you will now find popular titles such as Consumer Report, Newsweek, and Time.

Recarpeting is in progress this week, so things may look a bit disorganized for the next several days; however, all the microfilm, microfiche, media, and music collections are still available. Once the recarpeting is completed, the CD collection will be moved into new high density, space saving storage cabinets. The area will be repainted and furniture reinstalled during the week of July 13-17. Painting will begin on Wednesday, July 15, and furniture installation will begin on Thursday, July 16.

When completed, the new Media Room will have four additional group workstations and 18 additional public workstations along with several listening/viewing stations. It will also include comfortable tables, chairs and lounge furniture. The microfilm, microfiche, newspapers, CDs, and media will remain in the room. Accessing Books and Journals from the Fordham Library

As part of the library consolidation process, the Fordham Library was closed for public access on June 12, 2009. Over the next several months, Fordham’s books and journals will be relocated to the Dunbar Library. In the meantime, we have implemented the following process to enable Wright State patrons to access the materials in Fordham’s closed stacks:

The library staff will retrieve requested books from Fordham twice per day M-F. The first retrieval will be between 7:30 and 8:30 am (for delivery to Dunbar Library around 9:30 am) and a second retrieval will be in the afternoon at 1pm for delivery around 2pm.

Requests for Fordham journals should be submitted as ILLiad article requests. Articles will be scanned and delivered electronically as long as the journals are in closed stacks. Please contact our Information Delivery Services department (x2525) if you have questions about this process.

Relocating Offices & Furniture

Please pardon any noise and disruption this week (May 26-29) as we begin moving furniture and relocating offices in preparation for the libraries’ consolidation. This phase should be completed by Friday, May 29, and things will be back to “quiet” as students prepare for their finals.

Library Pickup Location Changes

Effective Monday April 27, the option to request materials for pickup at the Fordham Library location will no longer be available from the drop-down menu in the library catalog. Instead, books and media requested in the local or OhioLINK catalog should be requested for pickup at the Dunbar Library.

Borrowers are encouraged to carefully review their pickup notices since items requested on and before April 27 will still be shipped to the Fordham location. This change is being made now so that requests in process will be completed before the Fordham Library closes to the public on June 12.

FHSL’s Move to Begin in June

With classroom construction scheduled to begin in the Medical Sciences building on June 15, Fordham’s last official day to be open to the public will be Friday, June 12. At that time, Fordham’s course reserves, reference, and AV collections will be moved to the Dunbar Library. Over the summer, Fordham’s computers will be moved to Dunbar and will be ready for use beginning fall quarter. Fordham’s book collection will be relocated to Dunbar over the next 12-14 months; in the meantime, books can be requested using the Library’s online catalog and then picked up at Dunbar Library the following day. Throughout this transition, our goal is to maintain all library services with as little disruption and inconvenience as possible to our library users.

Libraries consolidation

In response to the current budget climate in the state, we in University Libraries are asking ourselves how we might reduce expenses while preserving the quality of our operations. We have considered all of the implications to our services and have come to the conclusion that the consolidation of the Fordham Health Sciences Library with Dunbar Library will help us accomplish this goal. In addition to being responsive to the current budget constraints, this consolidation will also re-purpose space that will be converted into needed classrooms to support our growing enrollment.

The team from the University Libraries is in the process of planning and implementing a consolidation of the Dunbar Library and the Fordham Health Science Library. We are working to integrate the services and collections that are now in two separate libraries, eventually combining them all into the space currently occupied by the Dunbar Library. Your input to this process is greatly appreciated.

This process will begin this spring and may take until June 2010 to complete. Throughout the consolidation we will work to keep disruptions to a minimum in both the Fordham and Dunbar Libraries. We do, however, ask for your patience while our work is under way. Upon completion of this project, the health sciences resources and services previously provided by the Fordham Health Sciences Library will be fully available in the Dunbar Library.

In order to keep everyone informed of our plans and process, the University Libraries will create a blog, available at the University Libraries website, to share information as it becomes available, to receive additional input from you and to respond to any questions you may have.

Our goal is to continue to provide excellent service to all of our students, faculty and staff throughout this transition period and to continue the full support for all of our academic programs, including health sciences, and to emerge stronger and better positioned as a university.
