The blog had previously stated that things should be done in time to be quiet again for finals week. I realize this is a stressful time for both students and staff as finals are going on and the move is taking place, but quiet is just not the word. I have been patient with the noise all week, have been courteous with the staff hauling away most of the tables, and have been more than tolerant of the daily scrounge for a chair to pull up. However, this morning I was actually told to move from the table I was clearly studying at! It was slim pickings at best to even find a table on the second floor with a chair to spread out my books, papers, and laptop. Why don’t they just close the second floor if they are just going to make people move? This is often a student’s busiest week of the quarter! I am a graduate student, during finals week, in a library – does anyone else see anything wrong with what’s going on? This would have been much better to do next week in my opinion – the beginning of courses are never nearly as stressful and hectic as the end.

To the medical school people who have complained – I totally agree. I was heartbroken when I heard Fordham was closing. I am a biology grad student and have used the library myself quite a bit, but I feel that it is somewhat of an embarrassment to have a medical school without a separate medical library. What is even more daunting is that we do have the literature – just no longer the space and budget! I too see this as a huge set-back in the professionalism and reputation of our medical school. Won’t this also become a space issue? Dunbar is already cramped and quiet floors are not all that quiet, especially areas open to the noisy atrium. A loss indeed.

“Please pardon any noise and disruption this week (May 26-29) as we begin moving furniture and relocating offices in preparation for the libraries’ consolidation. This phase should be completed by Friday, May 29, and things will be back to “quiet” as students prepare for their finals.”

We are hopeful that the telecom wiring will be completed today, June 1. Once it is finished, things should be quiet again until Friday, June 12. Additional quiet space is available in FHSL’s silent study room and on the other side of 2nd floor. Individual study rooms are also available in the lower level.

Is the construction going to continue this week? I was there at around 8:45 this morning (Monday) and there were two guys upstairs in the quiet study area running wire and drilling while conversing. Has WSU Libraries found any alternate quiet study areas if the construction is going to continue until the library closes?

Just to add to what has already been said, it’s sad to think we’re about to have the only MD program in the state without a health sciences library. I realize that there are budgets to be met, but to take away such a resource to current and prospective students alike is very disappointing. A nice lab or lecture hall means little without space for the actual learning and research to occur.

I am struggling to say the least as a nursing student but I want to say thank to all in the Fordham for your help. You have been my saving grace many times and I appreciate it. The Dunbar is nice but it will lack you personal touch. Thank You for everything.

So, now that we have a well-established and well-respected medical school, we will no longer have a medical library. I cannot imagine what the decision-makers were thinking! The School of Medicine just built a beautiful building that is the envy of many schools, but will no longer have a dedicated area for medical literature, texts, research, and for like-minded students to congregate.– this is a huge step backwards for the School of Medicine and the other professional/medical degree programs at WSU. I am surprised at how hush hush this process has been. I just learned of this “consolidation” today. As I write this, maybe 20 or more other students just walked in to Fordham! For me, the Forham library provides the proper study atmosphere, yet I do not have to walk all the way across campus to Dunbar. The computers in the student union are simply not adequate. Students need a large computer lab on the lot 4 side of campus too!

I agree with the many others that it is a shame that Fordham Library is closing. The location is convenient as it is close to where the graduate psychology classes are offered and it is not a far walk from some of the less crowded parking lots. The staff are always helpful and I particularly have found the services that Brian Olesko contributes to be extremely valuable in terms of helping me navigate search engines and sift through the massive amounts of information that are out there. I have also appreciated having a quiet study space that is available 24 hours, and one in which you can find an empty place to sit, which is unlike my experiences at Dunbar.
